The NQF is a ladder from Level 1 to Level 10. Knowing where a course sits tells you how advanced it is — and helps you plan the next rung.
The ladder, simply
- 1–3: foundational (up to Grade 11 equivalent).
- 4: matric / National Certificate.
- 5: Higher Certificate.
- 6: Diploma.
- 7: Degree.
- 8–10: Honours, Master's, Doctorate.
Why it matters for you
Job ads and bursaries often state a minimum NQF level. Knowing your current level and the level of a course tells you whether it's a step up, sideways, or a prerequisite you still need.
Planning your path
Map where you are to where you want to be, then choose courses that move you up the levels. Credits accumulate, so even smaller programmes build towards bigger qualifications over time.
