First aid training is one of the most practical, life-relevant courses you can take — and often a workplace requirement. Here's what the three levels mean.

Level 1 — Basic first aid

Covers the essentials: emergency scene management, CPR, choking, bleeding, shock and basic wound care. Usually 1–2 days. Enough to be a workplace first aider for lower-risk environments.

Level 2 — Intermediate

Builds on Level 1 with more on injuries, medical emergencies, and managing a wider range of situations. Typically 2–3 days.

Level 3 — Advanced

The most comprehensive, covering advanced emergency care, use of equipment, and higher-risk environments. Often 4–5 days and suited to designated emergency responders.

Validity and refreshers

Certificates are typically valid for around three years, after which a refresher is needed. Always confirm the certification is recognised for your workplace's compliance requirements.
